UIII.AC.ID, JAKARTA - One fine day in Jakarta, around 17 Indonesian International Islamic University students, specifically the Master in Public Policy (MPP) program focusing on Climate Change, visited the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) of the Republic of Indonesia on Thursday, 7 December 2023.

The field trip to MoEF was a practical learning experience and an opportunity to observe how public policy in law enforcement covering the environmental and forestry sectors is implemented. The students had the privilege to listen to the keynote speech by the Minister of Environment and Forestry, Prof. Dr. Ir. Siti Nurbaya Bakar, M.Sc., who invited all participants in the 2023 Law Enforcement Coordination Meeting (Rakor Gakkum), during the Gakkum Festival, to think about a more modern and progressive approach to law enforcement. Namely, it is not merely a punishment or imprisonment approach but also focuses on recovery and restorative justice approaches.

Among the highlights of the visit was an interactive dialogue with the Director General for Law Enforcement, Dr. Rasio Ridho Sani, M.Com, MPM., or Pak Roy for short.

Throughout the dialogue, which took place at the Gakkum Intelligence Center, the students gained valuable insights into how policies related to law enforcement can be effectively and collaboratively implemented. They engaged in meaningful discussions with the DG and his team to share perspectives on challenges, best practices, and lessons learned, including the future cooperation opportunities between Indonesia and the students' countries of origin in the Global South.

The students were also lucky to have an intimate conversation under the tree inside the lush green Arborea urban forest with Ade Palguna Routeka, Head of the Human Resources Extension and Development Agency, and Agus Rusly, Secretary of the Directorate General of Climate Change Control. Pak Ade educated the students about various strategies in human resources management and capacity-building techniques for MoEF employees. As with Pak Agus, he updated the students about climate negotiations currently happening at COP28 in Dubai.

Through these interactions, the students witnessed firsthand how public policies can be translated into action in Indonesia's law enforcement context. The sharing and discussions with international students further broadened their understanding of the challenges and opportunities that may arise in the country's future law enforcement.

This visit reinforced their theoretical understanding and provided invaluable practical perspectives. The positive experience will serve as a strong foundation for future contributions, particularly in advancing law enforcement in the fields of environment and forestry in Indonesia.
